A big, fat yes to persistence

When someone has recently received a rejection letter from a publisher (me), it appears that the list of successful authors who experienced the same thing is endless. All of a sudden friends and family are a never ending source of famous writers facing turn downs and hardship while pursuing their career. I suspect they researched this beforehand and has created some sort of writer-friends anonymous group, to make sure their encouragement checks out.

My manuscript has been returned. I am not all that clever, but I assume this is a really bad sign. It hit me like a ton of bricks, drained me of all inspiration and made me lose the will to write.

Dear publisher…

Dear publisher.

While I understand these are stressful times for you, they are for me as well. For the last seven weeks I have been waiting anxiously for your response regarding my very first manuscript. It’s a tough time for any writer. I know my chances aren’t great, about the same as if I bought a lottery ticket, but it’s hard to let dreams go.

Emotional reasoning and being reasonable

“What was your reason for writing when you were seven years old?” he asked. He must have felt that was a clever question, so I decided to give him a clever answer.

“I didn’t know about publishers when I was a child. Then again, I didn’t know about rent, putting food on the table or paying bills either.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”
